London

About the city

Of all European capitals, London lives deepest in the imagination of travelers. We absorb London before we know it exists and when we finally approach the city, it does not disappoint. There are the red double-deckers, the bobbies and impassive guards at Buckingham, Westminster Abbey, and the notes of Big Ben, sounding familiar, as we have heard them before. We see these things with satisfaction. Yet there is much to surprise. London is not quaint. London is not a museum, though you could spend all of your time going from one to the next. It is a booming, urban sprawl, with traffic snarls, shops, and an astonishing international population. Visit the many monuments with nearly a millennium's worth of history, from the grave of Chaucer to the pub where the captain of the Mayflower drank to Piccadilly Circus, one of London’s most photographed sights. But don’t miss contemporary London, with its intensely active theatres, international cuisine, political demonstrations, the latest in music and fashion, punks and peers, and everyone in between. In 1777, writer Samuel Johnson said when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, and the phrase is still true. There's something different to experience every day in London.

Best of London Full Day

day 2 - Tour
See the best that London has to offer in this exciting full day of sightseeing!

Highlights
- Beat the crowds with early access to the Tower of London
- See the Changing of the Guards
- Pass by Downing Street and Big Ben before visiting Westminster Abbey

Start your day with early access to the Tower of London, home of the Yeoman Warders, former prison and execution site of three Queens of England. Our early morning visit means you will be among the first to enter the Jewel House and view the spectacular Crown Jewels, which have been held here and locked up for safekeeping every night for the last 600 years.

Then it’s time to step aboard a relaxing river shuttle as the tour heads up the Thames. Enjoy the sights as your guide points out major landmarks as you coast by. Arrive at the Embankment and follow your guide on a short stroll to see the Changing of the Guards. This world-famous ceremony takes place either at Buckingham Palace or at Horse Guards Parade, depending on the day. Your guide will make sure you are in a prime position to enjoy the best views at this crowded event and will bring this experience to life with colourful commentary regarding the history and pageantry behind the ceremony as the Queen’s Foot Guards, with their red tunics and unmistakable bearskin hats, march to Buckingham Palace, where we end the morning portion of our tour.

After a break for lunch on your own, re-join the group and your expert local guide for a stroll around the city’s most iconic buildings and monuments. We’ll begin at Trafalgar Square, home of the National Gallery and Nelson’s column, before proceeding down Whitehall. This recognisable street is lined with government departments and ministries, including the old Palace of Whitehall, which burned down in the 17th century, leaving only the Banqueting Hall still standing. You will also view the Horse Guards, guarded by the Household Cavalry in their sentry boxes, wearing their plumed silver helmets and mounted on their magnificent steeds. We follow these experiences with a pass by Downing Street, home to the British Prime Minister, before arriving at Parliament Square, where you will be treated to spectacular views of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. After learning about the Palace of Westminster, home to the British Parliament, it’s on to Westminster Abbey, site of royal coronations and weddings.

Liverpool

About the city

Difficult to mention Liverpool without thinking about the Beatles. This band is still a matter of pride for the Liverpudlians, but that should not overshadow other attractions in this city on the west coast of England. Its undeniable cultural dynamism today materializes in the rehabilitation and reuse of its industrial heritage, the conversion of the Albert Dock as a cultural and leisure centre, the opening of the Tate Gallery or the creation of the Garden Festival have made Liverpool one of the most vibrant cities in the country. Without a doubt, Albert Dock is the most important sight of Liverpool. A succession of solid brick warehouses surround a pond. A World Heritage site, the Albert Dock houses the award-winning Tate Liverpool, the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the stunning International Slavery Museum. With so much to see and do, rest weary feet in one of the many bars, cafes and restaurants situated around the dock. And then there's the Beatles. There are many places around the city that cherish this legendary band, museums, bars, shops, hotels and cafeterias themed around the band’s history attract many musical pilgrims. All this Beatles sites share the spotlight with another symbol of the city: The Metropolitan Cathedral, the biggest cathedral in the UK, also attracts many tourists due to its unusual architecture. Of course, it's impossible to talk about Liverpool without mentioning football. Here, on Anfield stadium, home of Liverpool F.C, visitors will learn all there is to learn about this great club. Around the stadium there are a few pubs for pre-match drinking and meet first-hand the team’s passionate fan base. Now, that is the real Liverpool experience.

Hamburg

About the city

Hamburg, centuries-old trading city, is a busy mixture of Hanseatic commercialism and cosmopolitanism. A very handsome city, though badly damaged during WWII, much of the copper-roofed brick architecture so characteristic of northern Germany survives, while lovely parks and lakes give rise to Hamburg’s claim that it is the Venice of the north. An active cultural life lends further vitality to this sprawling port city. Hamburg’s old town is filtered with wonderful canals running from the Alster to the Elbe. The richly ornamented Rathaus dominates the city centre. Close by is the equally imposing St. Michaeliskirche. Climb the massive spire of this lovely baroque church for a splendid view. Near the Rathaus are the Börse, appropriately grand for this city of commerce, and the devastated St Nikolai church. Its remains are considered an anti-war memorial. Shopping lovers should head towards Pöseldrof, a charming quarter of ritzy homes, small cafes, boutiques and antique shops. The night birds will have a blast at the infamous St. Pauli district. Hamburg will surprise visitors with its dynamic and cool atmosphere. In this city absolutely everyone can find a good place to fit one’s taste. Its multiple parks, canals, bridges and beautiful lakes formed by the river Alster, will make you forget its apparent austerity.

Amsterdam

About the city

Amsterdam has an atmosphere all of its own, through an amalgam of concentric canals, vintage bicycles, idyllic parks and scintillating galleries. Few experiences can compare with cycling the Grachtengordel, the girdle of canals that radiate south from Central Station that are lined with a crazy quilt of narrow residences dating from the city's Golden Age. While motor vehicles customarily blight the cityscapes of other European capitals, a constant flow of bicycles seem only to enhance Amsterdam’s beauty. Enter an alternate universe where non-motorised transport is the norm, every bridge and thoroughfare features a bike lane and motorists customarily defer to their two-wheeled counterparts. Amsterdam remains a global crossroads and an ever-vibrant centre of art, music and culture, with a never-ending cavalcade of exhibitions, concerts, plays and festivals. Aside from such monoliths of art as the Rijks and Van Gogh museums, there are myriad less-visited spaces on quirkier themes. The festival line-up is equally varied, devoted to everything from fringe theatre to minimal music to tattoos, and in late summer the renowned canals become the stage for a series of chamber music concerts. Revelry is at its peak on King’s Day, a birthday party for the King This is when the capital is clad in patriotic orange, the canals brim with party boats and the city turns into a huge flea market as everyone empties their closets on the pavement and hawks their clutter.
